Brewing a Sustainable Future
An estimated 100,000 hectares of forest—an area larger than Singapore—are lost every year to coffee farming. During Climate Week 2024, a groundbreaking initiative was announced, uniting key global players to transform the coffee supply chain. NGIS, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Google, The International Coffee Organization (ICO), Illy, and Lavazza have partnered to build a more sustainable, transparent, and resilient coffee value chain, with an initial focus on Africa.
At TraceMark™, we understand that sustainability and transparency are essential to the future of global supply chains. As demand for ethically sourced products continues to rise, this initiative is designed to address the challenges posed by new regulations, such as the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This regulation will enforce strict requirements for products entering the European market, ensuring they are sourced responsibly and sustainably.
Using Geospatial Technology for Collective Impact
Our Executive Director, Nathan Eaton, recently highlighted at the UNIDO summit how geospatial technology can drive change within the coffee industry. By leveraging AI, climate data, and cloud-based solutions, we aim to enhance visibility across the entire value chain—from growers to distributors. This collaborative initiative seeks to democratise access to data, empowering all stakeholders in the coffee supply chain to improve productivity and protect the environment.
"The opportunity to utilise innovative solutions for supply chain transparency is vital in addressing the challenges of sustainable coffee sourcing in Africa," Mr. Eaton said. By fostering a transparent and climate-resilient coffee industry, we can support the continent's transition into a leading eco-friendly coffee producer.
Facing Future Challenges
One of the key challenges facing exporters in 2025 will be robust supply chain reporting. With the EUDR set to reshape our understanding of raw material sourcing, the integration of geospatial technology and satellite-derived data within this initiative will provide essential tools to monitor and analyse deforestation on a global scale. This capability is crucial for fostering transparency and ensuring that consumers can trust the origins of their coffee.
We are committed to supporting this collaborative effort, focusing on sustainability, transparency, and traceability across global markets. By embracing innovative technologies and working alongside industry partners, we are excited to contribute to a sustainable coffee future for Africa and beyond.
